McDougall Minerals sells high-quality mineral specimens from all over the world at fair prices to collectors of all levels, from beginners to connoisseurs. The website includes news about recent finds and shows, learning resources, articles and photographs, and adventures to mineral localities.I have been deeply involved in the world of minerals and mining for the last 25 years, having acquired and dealt in thousands of mineral specimens (many acquired directly from the source and also personally collected). When it comes to mineral specimens themselves, I care most about three things: quality, aesthetics and the interesting-unusual.My prior career included 18 years with a top Canadian firm, where excellent, professional, responsive client service and client relationships were fundamental to our success, and I am happy to bring this same approach to McDougall Minerals. The goal of McDougall Minerals – what makes me tick these days – is to bring you the best I can in mineral specimens from all over the world, to help you enjoy the world of minerals and build the collection you want to build. I hope you will find our website interesting and fun to read – and hopefully you will find mineral specimens for your collection.

Featured Item: Barite

Location: Meikle Mine, Bootstrap Mining District, Elko Co., Nevada, USA
Size: 8.9 x 6.8 x 6.0 cm
Item #: 200547
Comments: A large, sharp, 6.6 cm golden barite crystal perched on associated barite crystals from the Meikle Mine in Nevada. The crystals have glassy lustre and some of the small ones are completely transparent, while the large central crystal is translucent. The large crystal has minor chipping – I would mount it for display as in the first photograph and from that angle the main crystal is super (without support, it sits as in the third photo). The smaller crystals are mostly excellent but a few are incomplete. These imperfections make this very affordable for such a great display piece. Looks fantastic in the cabinet.

The barites from the Meikle Mine came out for about 3 years in the late 1990s and are wonderful specimens for the species. This piece is from the Pete Richards collection – it was originally sold by Harvey Gordon to the A.E. Mineral Museum of Michigan Tech (where it was catalogue # 98217).

Featured Item: Rutile

Location: Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Size:
2.2 x 1.1 x 0.9 cm
Item #:
RUTILEBRAZ122101
Comments:
Rutile is known from thousands of localities around the world, but there was a very limited find of some of the finest quality crystallized examples of the species in the early 1970s in Brazil. My father, Richard Kosnar was on site at Diamantina when they were coming out and purchased a select few pieces of these amazing Rutiles. There are two characteristics that make this piece so special. First is the overall quality, as it is a superb, very well-crystallized, razor-sharp, brilliantly lustrous, metallic, deep red colored, reticulated twinned crystal group, and a complete “floater” to boot as it’s crystallized on all sides. The second and more impressive aspect of the piece is that it is incredibly GEMMY, which may not ordinarily be a major factor when it comes to Rutile, but you usually only see “needle”-thin crystals that will pass light, and the amount of transparency that you can see when this piece is backlit, is mind-blowing considering the thickness of the crystals. This is ostensibly one of the finest crystallized Rutile specimens ever seen from any Brazilian locality for the simple fact that it is GEM GRADE Rutile in addition to being superbly crystallized. You just don’t see crystals of this thickness that will pass light, and as you can see, there are deep glowing fiery hues inside of this specimen when it’s backlit. If you’re a thumbnail collector, or if you’re a more discerning collector who appreciates top quality crystallized examples of any species, regardless of the size, this is an important and historic specimen that would make a superb addition to any collection.
