Desert Winds Gems and Minerals…Featuring a Wide Variety of Beautiful & Unique Gem & Mineral Specimens from around the World

Featured Item: Benitoite & Neptunite on Natrolite Matrix

Location: Benitoite Gem Mine, San Benito County, California, USA
Size: 7.4 x 4.8 x 2.5 – Largest crystal in cm: 1.8
Item #: BN01
Comments: Stunning small cabinet specimen, from a one of a kind locale that has been commercially exhausted! This beauty has it all, featuring: two large, four medium, five small, and several tiny Benitoite crystals!!! All are quite gemmy, and have great color. The two largest crystals are just about triple terminated, and are intertwined with smaller crystals! The crystal qualities are excellent, displaying classic Benitoite deep, lustrous, blue. There are several small, perfectly formed Neptunite crystals scattered throughout. A covering of pristine white Natrolite makes this specimen a beauty. You just do not see many of this caliber left out there! High quality specimens with associations of Benitoite, Neptunite, and Natrolite are eagerly sought by collectors worldwide. Truly a fine quality representation of the species.

-Earth’s Hidden Treasures™ is a mineral, fossil and meteorite business that began in 1994. It grew out of a passion to collect rocks, minerals and fossils – ‘hidden treasures’ – that nature has produced in an amazing array of formations, colors, shapes and sizes. We continuously seek out the most reasonably priced, quality specimens for our customers. We have over 1,000 specimens at each of the two antique malls (East State Antique Mall in Rockford & Volo Antique Mall in Volo) in northern Illinois. We participate annually as vendors in several Rock and Gem shows in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, and offer some of our quality specimens for sale online. We have over 100,000 specimens, most priced under $50.

Featured Item: Stilbite

Location: Aurangabad District, Maharashtra, India
Size: 3.64 x 2.6 x 1.7 inches
Comments: This piece looks very nice with just a little extra support under it. The typical “Sheaf” structure sets this piece out from the others. The only thing that keeps the price out of the three digits is the minor damage to the secondary crystals on the left side that you can see in the pictures.

Stilbite is the name of a series minerals of the zeolite group. Before 1997, Stilbite was recognized as a mineral species, but a reclassification changed it to a series name that includes the Barrerite – Stilbite-Ca – Stilbite-Na – Stellerite series. Stilbite-Ca, by far the more common of the series. The Ca and Na species are visually indistinguishable, and the series name Stilbite is still used whenever testing has not been performed. The color is usually colorless or white, also yellow, brown, pink, salmon, orange, red, green, blue or black. The luster is generally vitreous, and on the perfect cleavage parallel to the plane of symmetry it is markedly pearly. The streak is white and crystals are transparent to translucent.

Stilbite is a common member of the zeolite group, and is found in most of the world’s important zeolite deposits. Single crystals are tabular and flattened usually with pointed termination. Crystals will usually be in platy aggregates, or in distinct curved aggregates of fan-shaped or wheat sheaf bundles, and in unique “bow tie” formations.

I have been collecting since 1966 – starting at the ripe old age of six! I originally collected pyrites and Herkimer diamonds as I lived in Western New York until I was 13. Now, I collect old German and Italian specimens and rare faceted gemstones. You can see some pictures of my collection in my photo gallery. In addition to my collecting experience, I have a Graduate Gemologist degree from the GIA.My philosophy is simple. I endeavour to offer quality specimens in all price ranges. I try to keep my prices as reasonable as possible. My descriptions, locality information, and photos are as accurate as I can make them. And I value customer service – I will try to answer all inquiries as quickly as possible, whether about my offerings or about mineral collecting and gemmology in general.

Featured Item: Corundum var. Sapphire

Comments: Twinned Sapphire – Passara Gem Mine, Badulla, Uva Province, Sri Lanka #1Gem097 – Twinned Sapphire – Passara Gem Mine, Badulla, Uva Province, Sri Lanka #2 I purchased a set of three very unusual sapphire crystals from a Sri Lankan gemologist while in Tucson. These crystals are all flattened twins, with unusual blue and clear color zoning. She mentioned that these were recently found at Passara and, as far as she knows, she purchased all of them. This crystal has an unusual etched termination and measures 1.9 x 1.3 x 0.4 cm.

Item#: F473

The Fluorites grew on a crumbly brown matrix, which partly includes some of the crystals. The Fluorite fluoresces bright purple in UV. These are very large Fluorites for the locality, and is an early acquisition (pre 1999). Only a few very trivial chips on some of the edges, and incomplete on the back. This is a very impressive Chinese Fluorite.

Golden State Gem & Mineral is a California based company which was started in 2014 through a love for gems and minerals. The founder Richard Vogl, with a background as a Geologist, has always enjoyed collecting gems and minerals. He started collecting fine mineral in the early 80s with his first serious collecting of Fluorite at the historic Felix Mine in Azusa, California and Tourmaline in Pala, California. He traded his first flat of Felix Mine Fluorite for five Benitoite thumbnails and the rest was history. Golden State Gem & Mineral once started as just a dream, but has since become a reality and finally we can share our love for gems and minerals with everyone. Most recently Richard has taken up faceting gemstones and is an accomplished gem artist, in addition to becoming a Certified Gemologist. We are a global gem and mineral dealer which offers a wide variety of fine mineral specimens and gemstones with a passionate love for fine tourmaline specimens and other pegmatite gem minerals. We also offer a wide variety of gemstones including rare faceted gemstones including Benitoite and Red Beryl. We sell at major shows such as The Tucson Gem and Mineral show, The Denver Gem and Mineral Show, and The West Coast Gem & Mineral Show, along with the internet.

Hummingbird MineralsMy name is Jim Brown. I began Hummingbird Minerals about six years ago, while still working in the Medical Device Industry, as a Quality specialist and leader. I retired in the spring of 2009 from industry and started focusing full time on my business of selling fine mineral, rock and crystal specimens. I am a one person shop, at present, and thus do everything needed, such as sourcing specimens, doing the photography, Internet site management and shipping. It is a lot of work, but I enjoy the business immensely and it keeps me mentally active.James Brown, Hummingbird MineralsI built the business around my preference for mostly cabinet size specimens with nice aesthetics or eye appeal. I have been told many times that I have a good eye for finding such specimens. I was not that interested in selling at Shows and decided to focus on Internet selling. However, I realized, from my own experience, that buying a specimen over the Internet could often be disappointing due to the varied quality of mineral photography. Therefore, I decided to build a site with the highest quality photos I could achieve, with larger formats (file sizes), such that the images would be as close to actually seeing the specimen first hand, as possible. Of course, I did not achieve this goal as well as I wanted in the beginning, but I have continued to learn and improve each year, and have received many positive comments on the site’s photos. I currently use a Canon Rebel XTi 12 MP camera with a Canon Macro Lens EF-S 60mm.
Hummingbird Minerals currently has eleven (11) galleries of mixed fine mineral specimens from around the world. In addition, there is a gallery of Rhodocrosite specimens. I try to publish an update at least twice per month. I recently acquired a fine collection from Jorge Diaz Asenjo of Oviedo, Spain, and will be offering specimens from his collection over the coming months. Prices on the site mostly range from $50 to $1,000, but there are some specimens offered with much higher values and prices. I try to keep my margins reasonable, thus discounts are not easily offered. However, for repeat/trusted Customers, I am open to very flexible payment options. I welcome comments and suggestions regarding content and quality of the Hummingbird Minerals site. I can be contacted at hummingbirdminerals(at)hotmail.com or, by phone, at 845 986 7088.

Hoff’s Rock Shop

It all began in 1952, when my grandfather Vaner Tangborn opened Tangborns’ Rock Shop, eight miles south of Bemidji, Minnesota on Highway 71. His was an immense, one-man operation that he ran until 1991, shortly before his death at age 96. He traded, sold, collected, and sometimes gave away amazing amounts of rocks, crystals, and gems. He tumbled, polished, and sawed rocks, and made them into jewelry. He made over 1500 rock tables and shipped them all over the world. Some of his interests were geology, science, Einstein’s theories, the age and origins of the universe, and the geologic forces that brought his rocks and fossils into existence. He was a patient teacher to young children, helping them with their rock collections and teaching them to use lapidary equipment. Thousands of people passed through his shop. He also found time to perform music, serve on local boards, and maintained a lifelong interest in politics.
