1. Kanan Road Zeolites and Quartz

by Justin Zzyzx

California is full of locations where minerals have been found and then lost to urban sprawl. Dravite crystals in Beverly Hills, Opalized Turretella in Malibu, Agates in Acton, Gold in the Hollywood Hills and someday, maybe some of the land around this classic volcanic deposit in the Santa Monica Mountains

Sitting on my shelf of self collected minerals a sparkling geode half with an odd rainbow shine. The coating is actually a layer of natural petroleum, common among the finds of the area.

For a mile or so you can find nice specimens of Quartz, Agate, Natrolite, Chalcedony, Pyrite, Calcite, Ferrierite and lots of other interesting things along the roadside just outside the small town of Agoura. I’ve been to this area a few times, the first time I was lead here by my late friend Larry Bruce, who showed me all the little spots around the road where you could find dendrite Agate, pyrite included Chalcedony plates, Quartz geodes and Natrolite sprays. Almost everything has a little bit of natural petroleum sticking to it. The basalt deposits are well worth taking a little time and visiting. You can come in from Kanan Road off the 101 and drive south to the 1 PCH and go to the beach.

Material is laying all over the ground, some items can be worked out of the cliff faces, but you really should wear a hard hat at all times around this area and watch for falling rocks. Some of the Agates are really fantastic, banded, zoned and dendrite filled! There is something for everyone! I lead a field trip here once and the 30+ people that came had a great time and lots of interesting things were found!

To get to this location, simply get on the 101 and take the kanan road exit headed south. You will pass Agoura road on the right (west) and Cornell road on the left (east). After the first bend in the road the northern side of the road will be full of places to pull off and search about for specimens.

Here is a google map of the area. Click on me! The collecting area is on the northern side of the part of Kanan road after the split on Cornell Road and starts immediately after the first bend in the road. Northern side should have plenty of parking area off the road.
